Building Communities with Morgan Sindall

One of the subtle, but rewarding, perks of my job is witnessing a project evolve from blueprint to a vibrant community space. Recently, I joined Morgan Sindall at Heathfield Community Centre (actually a little while back now), capturing interactions alongside formal photos as they rebuilt a youth hub with an eco-friendly timber frame. A standout moment was the team signing a section of the frame—a beautiful opportunity for an artistic eye. The challenge? Keeping construction facilities out of shot while ensuring authentic moments, as people naturally huddle together in the cold to discuss serious matters (which, let’s be honest, doesn’t always result in beaming smiles). But I feel I added enough Hugh Grant worthy charms to sneek a couple of smirks out.

This project has even spurred me to invest in my own branded hi-vis, though don’t worry—I haven’t bought a clipboard just yet. Morgan Sindall continues to shape communities in meaningful ways, and I’m grateful to document their work. Whenever I work with them, I feel like I'm catching up with friends. A progmatist might celebrate... what more can someone want from work.

It’s always fascinating watching a site go from 'construction chaos' to something genuinely impressive. One day it’s all steel beams and hazard tape, the next it’s a space ready to serve the community, while kids roam the corridors looking for the best stength wifi, to tickle their fortnite addiction. While I'm pretty nifty with a hammer, I like to think my camera work contributes in its own way. After all, what’s the point of a brilliant new space if no one gets to see it looking its best?
