Capturing Artistry: A choreographic Journey with Hattie.

In the world of contemporary dance videography, every project is a unique artistic endeavor, and our recent collaboration with Hattie of Musgrove Movement was no exception. Hattie approached us with a clear vision — she wanted to professionally and affordably film her MA dissertation in Contemporary Dance at her University (The University of Chichester). The challenge was not just to capture her intricate and focussed choreography but also to ensure that the audio, driven by the melodies of a live cellist and syncopated digital beats, played a central role in the storytelling.

Setting the Stage

From watching a wide angle version of Hattie’s dissertation it was evident that this project was something special. Hattie's dance style is a captivating blend of precision and fluidity, with an emphasis on synchronizing her movements with the nuances of the accompanying music. As we discussed the logistics / the relationship between the dance and the live musical element, it became clear that every detail mattered.

The Filming Day

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was capturing the intricacies of Hattie's choreography while ensuring the theatrics created by the lighting designer Natalie Rowland was respected and captured. It required precise calculation of cue timings and coordination between us, remembering that this was originally lit for the human eye, not camera, played to our strengths in technical theatre production. But this challenge was also what made the project so unique. We were not just documenting a dance; we were capturing a passion and a narrative in motion.

The Editing Process

As we delved into the editing process, we were continually amazed by Hattie's attention to detail. Her meticulousness in syncing her movements with the audio was nothing short of remarkable. It made our job in post-production both enjoyable and rewarding.

The final section of the 21-minute contemporary dance performance, left us in awe. Hattie was determined that this section should be one continuous shot, and what a choice it was! After a few practice runs, positioning and choreography of our own, Hattie’s choreography, combined with the live cello performance, created a mesmerising journey of artistry and emotion. The last shot is a beautifully choreographed unfolding that flows from beginning to end. It was more than a dance, documenting a show; it was a story told through movement and music.

Looking Ahead

Hattie's aspirations for this project are equally inspiring. Whilst she now has fresh content for her portfolio, she intends to use this masterpiece as a cornerstone of her funding application for an upcoming tour. We couldn't be more thrilled for her. To have played a part in capturing this work of art and helping Hattie on her journey is a privilege that we cherish.
