Love the simplicity and innocence this music adds… no it’s not from ‘Up’.

ECE Architecture's Urban Art Project: Finding your Medium

Introduction

In June, I collaborated with ECE Architecture, a company I have had a long and cherished relationship with. Our brief: to create a captivating video documenting their participation in the Worthing Festival 2023. This case study explores the considerations behind the lens as mikebdesigns (@mikebdesigns) captured the essence of ECE Architecture's unique Urban Art Project.

Chasing Light and Shadows

The architectural landscape played a pivotal role in this project. The building's north-facing orientation meant we had limited direct sunlight, offering only fleeting moments of perfect illumination. However, these moments revealed an unexpected gem - captivating shadows cast by the artwork. While there was sufficient light for the majority of interactions, these brief interludes with ideal lighting added an entirely new dimension to the Urban Art Project, infusing it with life and presenting unique opportunities from the inside of the office space.

Navigating Challenges

One of the unique challenges I encountered as a videographer was the absence of my own reflection. The glass windows, extending from floor to above head height, presented an intriguing challenge. From outside the building, the dark interior created an almost mirror-like quality. While this was ideal for capturing the art in contrast, it also meant I had a constant presence in the reflection. Exposing the camera for indoor use while attempting to encompass the external activity and contrast of the art was another hurdle. It required a delicate balance to capture the nuances of both indoor and outdoor scenes. The distraction of road traffic passing by the building further complicated matters, demanding precision and timing to ensure that the focus remained on the Urban Art Project.

Community Engagement Through Art

ECE Architecture is celebrated for its creative and artistic installations in the town and surrounding areas. The Urban Art Project is more than just a visual display; it's a medium for community engagement. This artistic project has a profound purpose, it serves as a medium to give insight into what the company does. Architects often draw wire diagrams and sketches, but these are typically confined to meetings and digitised in folders on servers. To the uninitiated, the building could easily be mistaken for an IT company. However, this Art project has transformed the perception. The image of a child waving at the office, with a glass barrier obstructing communication, embodies the essence of physical interaction. The art nestled between the two parties forms a vital connection, one that resonates profoundly with the audience. It's not merely a showcase of Worthing's creative spirit; it's a unique architectural celebration that brings ECE's work to life, with the touch of mikebdesigns.com (@mikebdesigns).

A Successful Journey

The final video reflects the challenges, triumphs, and artistry that defined this project. I am thrilled with the outcome and grateful for the opportunity to work with ECE Architecture once again. Their dedication to creativity and community engagement is commendable, and I eagerly anticipate our next collaboration.
